Chapter Nine

“It’s how I imagine speed dating to go.” Kaden rested his elbows on the breakfast bar and swiveled his hips to turn the seat of the tall stool.

“Imagine? So you’ve never tried it?” Carmen said in a low voice as she kept watch over Ryan from a distance as he gave his final interview.

It had been a day of interview after interview, a string of people from the media asking the same questions over and over.

How does he manage to look so interested all the time?

Ryan’s enthusiasm had never waned. At least not outwardly. He’d laughed, exchanged pleasantries with ease, and came across as upbeat, positive, and excited for the movie’s release.

Kaden leaned his head and looked up at Carmen. “And you have?”

Carmen pouted. “Maybe once or twice. We can’t all be lucky enough to find love in a place we would normally frequent.” Her pout became a frown as she eyed her brother. “Then again, sometimes it turns out to be not so lucky.”

Inhaling slowly, Kaden settled his gaze on Ryan. He was sure there was a tale behind him and Paul, how they’d met, how they’d become a thing, but it wasn’t one he cared to hear, nor did he think Ryan would want to tell it. He couldn’t deny, however, being curious as to why their relationship had taken the direction it had. What was it that went through a person’s head that they could treat another cruelly?

“Right.” Carmen’s expression changed to something more determined. “Time to call time.”

“This is the last one?” Kaden sat up and stretched his neck from side to side.

“For today.”

“Right.” His shoulders slumped.

“Something wrong?” Carmen ducked her head, leaned in closer. There was a concern in her gaze, fear for him, and it surprised him.

Kaden shook his head. “Just feeling a bit guilty.”

“Guilty?” She raised an eyebrow, and her aura shifted to that of Ryan’s protector. “What did you do?”

“Huh? Nothing.” He waved his hand in front of him. “I was thinking about how you’re paying for me to sit around this place. I feel as though I should be doing something more.”

Carmen picked up her cell phone, and for a moment, stared at the blank screen. “I think we both know it’s more than just that.” She glanced over to the staging area for the interviews.

Behind Ryan was the poster for the movie, both him and it framed by the view of the beach from the window.

“You paint a picture,” she said. “You’re a loving partner who stands at Ryan’s side despite the recent upset. And that is something. Or at least the something he needs right now.” With that, she headed over to Ryan, ready to call time on the day.

Kaden raised his fingers to his mouth and touched his parted lips gently. He thought about last night, about the kiss that had been nothing to do with painting a picture. He’d tried to get things clear in his head, to figure out what he wanted and needed to say to Ryan given their current working situation.
